Building Creative Capacity

One Community at a Time

Living Artist Society promotes cultural exchange through the arts, to aid in community development and support arts and culture professionals in the lower Hudson Valley.

The Society manages community projects from conception to execution and provides strategic planning and marketing resources to arts and culture professionals in the process.

Our aim is to support the efficacy of arts and culture to amplify positive impact for all.

Our projects are all about community. Artists, local businesses, government, schools, workers, and people of all ages and backgrounds collaborate to figure out what we need and how to make it happen. Forget about boundaries – we're all about making connections based on what we have in common and working towards shared goals.

Projects in Progress

A project to transform a former Strand Theatre (circa 1914) into a Community Arts and Culture Center. Partnering with local arts groups in need of affordable space, Living Artist Society put together a proposal that was selected by the Village as a priority project recommended for funding through the NY Forward/Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

In addition to managing the project, the Society will stay in place as a partner in the operations providing business performance monitoring and data analysis to support marketing and audience development.

A collaborative project between arts groups, historians, and the local community to promote the legacy of artist-civil rights activist Paul Robeson.

Living Artist Society is organizing a musical program to celebrate Robeson’s contributions and commemorate the 75th anniversary of events surrounding Robeson’s 1949 Concert just outside Peekskill on picnic grounds in Town of Cortlandt (aka the “Peekskill Riots”).

Proceeds will be used to establish a scholarship fund to inspire and support students pursuing multi-disciplinary careers in social justice.

Philosophy

The Society is based on two complementing sets of beliefs and values:

Community Perspective

  • The arts are essential to the health and well-being of a community.

  • Cultural exchange fosters an inclusive society.

  • A community that creates together is empowered to shape its own destiny.

Artist Perspective

  • Achieving positive impact through the arts requires access to the same resources available to for-profit organizations.

  • While profit is not the objective, non-profits can achieve greater sustainability by treating profitability as “the rules of the game”
